Floating accommodation “FLO” sparks tremendous interest
A floating lodging unit called FLO has sparked an overwhelming flow of inquiries from eager visitors who wish they could stay today—or even yesterday.
"We aim to make FLO available for rental starting the last week of June," says Vidar Østenby, general manager of Haldenkanalen Regional Park, the organisation behind the project. While the exterior is mostly complete, some interior work remains before FLO is guest-ready. Its name, derived from "floating lodge," also references water in motion, although Halden Waterway doesn’t experience significant tides, Østenby notes with a smile.
Designed with history and nature in mind
Currently docked at Ørje Brug, FLO seamlessly blends into its surroundings. Its design, which prominently features spruce wood and large windows, reflects the canal’s rich history where water and forest dominate the landscape. In collaboration with renowned architectural firm Snøhetta, Haldenkanalen Regional Park envisioned FLO as part of a series of unique accommodations to shine a spotlight on the Halden Canal—an undiscovered gem for many.
“FLO’s design mirrors the region’s history, with its façade resembling the timber logs once floated through the waterway,” Østenby explains.
With features like a spacious outdoor area and materials honouring local traditions, FLO offers tranquillity amidst water, birdsong, and rustling trees. The aim is to provide guests with a serene retreat, slowing life’s pace to a standstill where thoughts wander and history comes alive, such as the canal's proud log-driving era under Engebret Soot.
Unprecedented demand
The concept has already proven to be a success. FLO has drawn hundreds of inquiries, even though booking hasn’t officially opened yet. Guests can, however, join a waiting list. The attention skyrocketed after writer Gunnar Garfors highlighted FLO in his book "Bortom alfarveg – 81 reisetips til ein spektakulær noregsferie" (Beyond the Beaten Path – 81 Travel Tips for a Spectacular Norwegian Holiday). After spending a night in a hammock on the unfinished lodge, Garfors described the experience with glowing enthusiasm.
More than a cabin, not quite a boat
"This is neither a cabin nor a boat. FLO is unique and offers a nature experience many people are seeking right now. Its rarity is part of its appeal," Østenby summarises.
FLO is not motorised but is designed to float through the canal, placed by operators according to guest preferences—whether moored by the shore or on open water, requiring a canoe for access. The unit is designed for year-round use, with a central indoor fireplace and an outdoor fire pit providing heat.
Expanding opportunities
In the future, more floating accommodations may join the Halden Canal, though Østenby envisions simpler designs than FLO, potentially resembling floating shelters. However, exclusivity will remain a priority, ensuring the canal doesn’t become overcrowded. While FLO’s pricing will be close to hotel rates, the experience aims to offer both exclusivity and affordability.
“The Halden Canal is a magnificent waterway, and I believe many people will truly discover it for the first time through this project,” Østenby concludes.
