10 tips for activities for families with children this summer

Take your family on an adventure in sunny Østfold this summer. There’s plenty of fun for children of all ages.

Note: Remember to check opening times before heading out. Some places require advance booking.

1. Climb among the treetops

Tree-top climbing is the perfect family activity, suitable for all skill levels. Test your fear of heights, bring friends, or simply enjoy a good workout at the award-winning Klatring på Grensen (Climbing at the Border). Combine climbing with an overnight stay in one of the treehouses nearby.

2. Paddle through stunning scenery

For a family canoe or kayak adventure, Østfold offers many options. Canoes can be rented at Børtevann between Rakkestad and Sarpsborg, Kirkeng Camping, Stora Lee Camping in Aremark, or Fløterhytta in Halden. Moss’s Nesparken also offers kayak rentals. Haldenkanalen is a paddler’s paradise, with serene waters and unique natural beauty.

3. Enjoy a waterpark adventure

For action-packed fun, stay at the family-friendly Quality Hotel Sarpsborg, which features its own water park and play area. Badeland in Sarpsborg includes water slides, a lazy river, a jacuzzi, and the thrilling “Space Bowl” slide! In summer, cool off at Kongstenbadet with diving boards, splash pools, slides, and green picnic areas. Østfoldbadet offers year-round aquatic fun, with indoor and outdoor pools and slides.

4. Dive into the Sea

With the most sunshine days in Norway, Østfold is perfect for swimming. Whether you prefer sandy beaches, rocky coves, tranquil forest ponds, or serene lakes, the region has it all. Try the crystal-clear waters of Klaretjern in Indre Østfold or the many coastal beaches for a refreshing dip.

5. Jump, play, and explore

Visit one of the region’s trampoline parks, perfect for kids to burn energy. Parents can relax in the café while kids enjoy climbing frames, ball pits, and tunnels at places like Eventyrfabrikken or Leo’s Lekeland. Or, take the family island-hopping on Hvaler, exploring beaches and fishing for crabs at Skjærhalden.

6. Visit a science centre

At INSPIRIA Science Center, children can explore the interactive exhibition "Deep Dive" about marine life, as well as shows and activities. Outside, test cycling skills on the pump track, traffic training area, or the 500-meter e-bike track.

7. Go on a forest adventure

The woods are always open. Bring a frying pan and pancake batter for a fun forest outing, or enjoy hot dogs, flatbread, or waffles over an open fire. Activities like treasure hunts, geocaching, and photo challenges make it even more exciting. Explore Ormtjernhytta in Halden or the Bjørneløypa trail in Fredrikstad with sculptures and hidden surprises.

8. Immerse yourself in history

Visit Romsåsen Gruver Activity Park for thrilling zip lines, abseiling, and rock climbing. Travel back 150 years on a mine tour in Norway's only open nickel mine. Explore Gamlebyen in Fredrikstad, one of Scandinavia's best-preserved fortress towns, or Gamlebyen Model Railway Centre, Scandinavia's largest.

9. Discover forts and fortresses

Fredriksten Fortress in Halden offers beautiful walking paths and ghost tours for the brave! Solve mysteries at Escape History Fredriksten or explore Kongsten Fort near Gamlebyen in Fredrikstad, perfect for little adventurers.

10. A delightful farm visit

Animal lovers will adore The Funny Farm, where you can pet friendly mini pigs, hens, rabbits, peacocks, goats, and more. Feed the animals, explore the farm, and enjoy the on-site retro American diner. Open June and August, closed in July.
