Mysen is one of two towns in the Indre Østfold region

Mysen is a pleasant small town with a lot to offer. Mysen has a combination of charm and friendliness that only a small town can deliver. If you walk through the streets in the city center you are guaranteed to get a smile and a friendly hello. You will experience charming and unique shops, world-class food and exciting history behind every corner. Mysen is constantly working towards becoming Eastern Norway's most attractive small town!

The town of Mysen has retained its character as a small and cozy town. Here are the small shops in the cozy streets and the small pleasant centers. Here is created good old-fashioned well-being in a modern environment. Mysen is a station town from 1882. This is the town that the residents of the surrounding villages still say "Mysen is also our town". Mysen can offer everything you need. There is plenty of parking and good accessibility, it is not far from the car to the shop you are looking for. The town has about 7,000 inhabitants as of January 1, 2022. In the entire Mysen region there are about 12,000 inhabitants (2022). Around the town are the villages of Hærland and Eidsberg, as well as the towns of Trømborg and Slitu.

Mysen is probably best known for the Momarkedet,

For most people outside the Inner Østfold area, Mysen is probably best known for the Momarkedet, a marked which was located at Momarken trottertrack. Most people probably remember the atmospheric feeling that the TV program brought out in us, but the town is so incredibly much more.

The small shops, in the cozy streets

Mysen has often been called Østfold's answer to Grünerløkka / an area in Oslo. If you travel a little outside the city center to Slitu (midway between Askim and Mysen), you will find Morenen shopping center and several large retail businesses.

Short way to the best food

Many people appreciate that we practically live in the middle of the food plate. Indre Østfold is one of Norway's largest agricultural municipalities, and a lot of food is produced locally. There are more and more local food outlets, whether it's a shop, farm-to-table purchases or self-service ramps. See separate page for local food.

In Mysen, they are also lucky enough to have their own brewery, which also has a pub, food service and stand-up show. Slakteren /The butcher's brewery also has its own outlet where you can buy goods to take home. So does Bamsrud Gård, a little outside the city center. They have won many awards for their ice cream production.

In Mysen town, they have several cozy eateries - both restaurants and cafes that you can stop by. There is a warm and pleasant atmosphere at Villa Welhaven. They also have a cozy general store with sales of both local and other products. And if you really want to go out and enjoy yourself for an evening, La Moss is a good place to go.

Activities for young and old

In Mysen you don't have to sit still if you don't want to. There is a lot to do here for young and old. The distances are short and it doesn't have to cost much. In the center you will find both a skate ramp, volleyball court, frisbee golf, and great hiking trails along the Mysen river that are free to use. Høytorp Fort offers nice hiking terrain and you will find both a pump track and Momarken trotting track nearby. How about a trip to the cinema at Festiviteten. When King Winter comes and spreads his cloak over the country, there are both ski trails and toboggan runs at Høytorp Fort, Fjella and other places.

Out into the forest and up into the trees

We in Indre Østfold are lucky and have a lot of forest terrain around our cities. And The Norwegian tracking acosiation DNT Indre Østfold has done a formidable job in recent years and made it easier for us who like to use nature and go hiking. There are nice marked trails, picnic areas and shelters. There is a separate map of Fjella, the largest forest area in Østfold, and several other selected places. It can be purchased from both DNT and Visit Indre Østfold. Then you will also see that the region is full of nice waters where you can swim or fish. There is nothing better than settling down, bringing a hammock, eating food and looking out over the water and watching the fish wake up and hearing the birds sing.

Høytorp Fort

consists of 40 buildings, and is today a popular outdoor recreation area. There were skirmishes at the fort during World War II.

On historical grounds

As with many other places in Eastern Norway, Mysen has grown up around a railway station, after the Østfold Line's Eastern Line was opened in 1882. Not far from the center is Høytorp Fort, a very popular recreational area. Here are 40 buildings that were formerly military - and it is a mountain facility, with guided tours on Sundays. They have managed to get back several cannons that the Germans moved during the war. The fort was completed in 1915, and it was in battle with German troops in April 1940. At Momarken racetrack not far from the fort, for a number of years after the war, the annual Red Cross fair Momarkedet was held. A bit of history is reproduced on the walls of houses in the center of Mysen. Large murals with a bit of the history of Mysen now adorn several walls in the center.

Sleep Well

Midway between Mysen and Askim - in Slitu, we finally got our long-awaited hotel - Scandic Brennemoen in 2018. Things are going so well here, that the hotel has plans to expand the hotel. Or you can spend the night on a farm, both with and without animals. Or maybe you want complete silence, then we can recommend one of DNT's cabins in the forest. Either way, we warmly welcome you. Stay a day or two longer, and discover all the great things we have to offer here in our region.
