Take the family on an outing

Of the world's approximately 9,000 bird species, around 300 have their natural habitat in Norway, and another 200 rarer species visit during certain seasons.

Don't forget your binoculars

A good pair of binoculars is as important to a birdwatcher as a fishing rod or net is to a fisherman.

If you are lucky

you may spot birds of prey such as ospreys and marsh harriers hunting in the wetlands. Bring food and drink and enjoy a day in our beautiful local nature areas!

Which birds you can expect to see

Varies from area to area, and from one season to another. The largest flocks are seen in spring and autumn.

Who stays and who moves on?

Whooper swans, cranes, geese, and various types of ducks are among the regular visitors passing through. The toughest, most hardy species overwinter here, so even in winter you can see birds at several of the towers.

Dillevik Tower - Hæra, Trøgstad

Dillevik Tower is a bird tower by Lake Dillevik, which is open to everyone. The tower has an archway where you can go in and warm up, and a three-meter-high tower. The bird tower is located on the north side of Lake Dillevik and offers good views in all directions. Here you can get close to bird life and enjoy flocks of cranes or a rare shoveler. The bird tower can be used by everyone: hikers, families on Sunday outings, ornithologists, and school classes.

Dilleviktårnet is located in the Hæra Nature Reserve. An area with a bustling bird life. The area was protected in 1992 to preserve an important wetland area with vegetation, bird life, and other wildlife, as well as a highly diverse natural environment that represents a beautiful and valuable feature of the cultural landscape. Kallaksjøen, Dilleviksjøen, and Skottasjøen are known for their vibrant bird life. Nearly 200 bird species have been recorded within the nature reserve. Many of these are wetland birds that thrive in and around water.

How to get there:

Take Route 115 east towards Bjørkelangen from Route 22 in the municipal center of Skjønhaug. Follow Route 115 for 4.6 km, turn right towards Skjæringsrud at Hærseter farm, and right again after approx. 1300 meters (onto a narrow

Gjølsjøen, Marker

Gjølsjøen Nature Reserve is a wetland area in Marker municipality that was protected in 1992. The area has a particularly interesting breeding bird fauna. The lake is also an important migration area for many species. The nature reserve covers an area of 1198 decares, of which approx. 211 decares is land area. Gjølsjøen is a narrow, 5 km long, nutrient-rich lake surrounded by cultivated land and spruce-dominated mixed forest.

There are two bird towers at Gjølsjøen. We recommend the one on the south side of the bridge, as it is the most easily accessible.

How to get there:

Take Route 21 south from the E18 (exit to Ørje) and drive for about 5 km. Turn left towards Kasbo. After about 1 km, the road crosses Gjølsjøen, and you will see the tower on the right on the opposite side. There is a parking pocket just before the bridge.

Lysakermoa, Eidsberg

Lysakermoa Nature Reserve is located in the southwestern part of Eidsberg in Indre Østfold municipality. It is located at Nedre Lysaker farm on the eastern bank of the Glomma river. The Glomma flows quite slowly here, and large clay banks have formed, creating a shallow water area. This is good grazing land for ducks and wading birds. The river does not usually freeze here, which makes the area very important as a wintering ground for several bird species. The area covers almost 2 km of shoreline and is several hundred meters wide.

How to get there:

Take Route 124 south towards Rakkestad from the Sekkelsten intersection on the E18, and you will reach Eidsberg Church after about 8 km. Continue south for about 2.3 km, then turn right at the bottom of a long hill onto the exit to a small parking lot (signposted to the bird tower). Follow the path for 350 meters towards Glomma and Lysaker farm.
