Unionsleden Moss - Karlstad

Unionsleden is a 350 km long cycle path that stretches from Moss in Norway to Karlstad in Sweden. The Swedish section has become Sweden's 4th national cycle route. As you cycle the Unionsleden, you will be captivated by the beautiful and varied landscape. You'll cross small villages, cycle along idyllic lakes and enjoy winding gravel roads through both dense forests and open landscapes with grazing animals. The area is rich in wildlife, with moose, deer, red foxes and much more to spot along the way. You'll always be within easy reach of a refreshing dip or a beautiful vantage point where you can take a break and enjoy a picnic.

The name and idea for Unionsleden is inspired by the Norwegian-Swedish union that was formed in Moss in 1814 and dissolved in Karlstad in 1905.

Transportation

In the summer of 2025, bus transportation will be set up with Dalsland buss, which will run twice a week. More information will follow regarding times and stops.

The cycle path is divided into seven daily stages:

You can find a detailed description of each stage on the Unionleden website. we have listed thembelow. Here you'll also find an interactive map that makes planning easy, with an overview of where to find accommodation, restaurants and exciting sights along the route. This map makes it easier to customize your trip according to your wishes and needs.

The Norwegian stages are also shown below, so you can easily get a complete overview of what to expect. Please note that there are two routes on the Norwegian side from Spydeberg to Ørje: a main route and an alternative route, "Unionsleden Nord". This gives you the opportunity to cycle a roundtrip at the Norwegian side and explore several exciting areas along the way.

1. **Moss - Askim, 45.5 km

2. **Askim - Töcksfors, 57 km**

3. **Töcksfors - Lennartsfors, 41 km**

4. **Lennartsfors - Bengtsfors, 46 km**

5. **Bengtsfors - Edsleskog, 42.8 km**

The Union Trail has two route options in Norway, and both are signposted.

This gives you the flexibility to choose the route that suits you best, and it also gives you the opportunity to cycle a round trip on the Norwegian side.

The name Unionsleden

Comes from the fact that the Union between Norway and Sweden was signed in Moss, after negotiations at Spydeberg vicarage, and concluded in Karlstad.

Attractions along the Unionsleden

Note that there are two different routes on the Norwegian side. A main route and a northern route. We would definitely recommend that you take the northern route around Solbergfoss Power Station. It's a powerful sight if you get there in the spring and see the water pass at the power station. The cycle path down to Askim town center is on a disused railway, where the rails have been removed. But it's very nice to cycle here. Both trails meet up again in Askim before heading in different directions just after Askim again.
