The Union Trail
The Union Trail (Unionsleden) is a 350-kilometer cycle route stretching from Moss in Østfold, Norway, to Karlstad in Sweden. It winds through a richly varied landscape — forests, rolling countryside, idyllic lakes and gravel paths — and is signposted throughout. As you cycle, you pass through small villages, historic sites like Spydeberg Parsonage, lock systems such as Ørje, and farm shops and cafés along the way. The trail takes its name from the union between Norway and Sweden (1814–1905), which began in Moss and formally ended in Karlstad — and those historical ties are woven into many of the stops and stories along the route.

The path is partly on asphalt and partly on gravel (around 60 % asphalt, 40 % gravel) and shows moderate difficulty over its approximately 36.5 km length, with a total climb of about 225 m. Along the way you’ll pass through areas of cultural and natural interest: historic sites such as old sawmills and interpretive signage telling the story of life along the Glomma.
