Østfold offers diverse and beautiful nature

From deep forests to vibrant coastal culture and accessible trails near city centres, Østfold has it all. Here are some fantastic hiking suggestions suitable for both adults and children.

1. Lookout towers – Indre Oestfold

Inner Østfold boasts a great collection of lookout towers, including Haukenestårnet, Norway's only preserved wooden fire tower, offering incredible views of Østfold’s stunning landscapes.

2. Kulåsparken in Sarpsborg – dip your toes in nature, right there in the city

Kulåsparken is a fantastic park located in the heart of Sarpsborg. It has been revitalised in recent years with a new concert amphitheatre, benches, exercise trails, walking paths, and a playground for children. The park also features a well-preserved burial ground with 40 burial mounds dating back to 200–300 AD.

3. Hjelmkollen – see Sweden

Hjelmkollen is a breathtaking viewpoint where you can see the approach to Halden and Fredriksten Fortress. Looking the other way, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the old and new Svinesund bridges and the mouth of Iddefjord towards Hvaler. This hike is suitable for children; just remember to bring a torch for the bunker. Benches and tables are available at the top for a scenic picnic.

4. Bjørneløypa in Fredrikstad – A fun trail for kids in Bjørneløypa (the bear trail)

Bjørneløypa is a delightful trail designed for children in Bjørndalen, Fredrikstad. Along the way, animal sculptures await discovery—look closely as some birds perch high in the trees, while bears hide behind every corner.

5. Coastal trail on Kirkøy, Hvaler – a walk through cultural history

The coastal trail in Skjærhalden, Hvaler, takes you through some of Norway’s finest nature, rich in history and monuments from various eras. The trail passes Bronze Age burial mounds, medieval house ruins, a medieval church, nature reserves, a national park, remnants of stone-quarrying, the Rødshue sculpture park, and Homlungen Lighthouse. The marked trail leads you along the water, through forests, over beaches, and rocky landscapes.

6. Glommastien – Sarpsborg to Fredrikstad

The Glommastien trail runs between Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg on both sides of the Glomma River, traversing protected cultural landscapes with remnants of old sawmill and brickworks industries. Along the trail, you’ll find new rest areas and information signs detailing the region’s industrial history.

7. Fredriksten Fortress – Halden

A walk through Fredriksten Fortress is a must. There are many historical monuments and viewpoints to explore, offering a rich blend of history and stunning scenery.

8. Våler Varde – Moss

Enjoy breathtaking views from Våler Varde, situated 117 metres above sea level.

9. Fugleleiken at Henestangen – Råde

From this scenic viewpoint, you can see all directions across Østfold. On clear days, you might even spot Gaustatoppen in the distance.

10. Trails in Moss

Moss offers beautiful trails along the sea, through forests, and around Lake Vansjø, suitable for all ages.
