Klatring paa grensen: A family favourite climbing experience among the trees
Klatring på Grensen in Halden is an ideal family activity if you’re spending your holiday in Østfold. Join us on a visit to one of Scandinavia’s largest climbing parks! (Paid collaboration with Ille Bra Blogg)
No summer in Østfold is complete without a trip to one of Norway’s coolest climbing parks – Klatring på Grensen. This park is a must for families seeking fun and exciting activities for children and adults alike. Whether you’re bringing a 2-year-old, a 12-year-old, a 22-year-old, or even an 82-year-old, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Fun for All Ages
Climbing is thrilling, and kids absolutely love it. Many say it’s one of the most exciting things they’ve ever done. It’s also a fantastic destination if the weather isn’t ideal. Climbing is fun even in light rain, cloudy skies, or windy conditions – the forest provides shelter, and swaying trees add an extra challenge!
What to Wear and Bring
Wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to use every part of your body – even your ears (we speak from comical experience)! Leave jewellery and rings at home, and consider wearing gloves, which are available for purchase on-site.
Booking and Arrival
While drop-ins are possible, the park recommends booking your time and harness in advance to save time and secure your spot. Arrive a bit early, as the most popular courses tend to get busier throughout the day.
How It Works
At your scheduled time, you’ll be fitted with a helmet and harness. First-time climbers go through a 15-minute training session with a guide before being set free to explore the courses.
The park offers 20 different courses, each with its unique challenges:
- Green and blue courses for beginners.
- Red, purple, and black courses for more advanced climbers.
The black course is not for the faint-hearted, ending with a zipline over a barn roof – an exhilarating challenge for daredevils.
Highlights include:
- Five Tarzan jumps
- Numerous ziplines
- Signature attractions like Låvesuget, Låvehoppet, and Ættestupet, perfect for those seeking an adrenaline rush.
Family Adventures
We first brought our girls, aged 4.5 and 6, and were amazed at how well they handled the challenge. They started with the pink children’s course, designed for the youngest climbers, where parents can guide them from the ground. Before we knew it, we were all tackling a beginner course together – laughing, cheering, and bonding as a family.
New Additions and Activities
The park, founded by Randi and Henrik Aune, now features a new longhouse for visitors to enjoy packed meals under cover. Aune also introduced a 8-metre-high net climbing tower, a hit with younger children.
Additional activities include:
- Paintball – a favourite for groups and stag parties.
- Pilgrimsleden walking trail through the park.
- Bungee trampoline, four-person bikes, electric trikes, and frisbee golf.
Food Options
Bring your own packed lunch or BBQ supplies to make the most of the park’s free gas grills – perfect for a break between courses. While snacks are available at the kiosk, a picnic is an excellent way to recharge your energy.
