Day 1: Canal History, Art Studios, and the Taste of Fine Beer
Start your journey at the Dalsland Center in Håverud, situated by the Dalsland Canal. The centre showcases local history, culture, and handicrafts. Håverud is renowned for its canal history, which you can explore at the Dalsland Center, the Canal Museum, and the 150-year-old aqueduct over the waterfall. Just a stone’s throw away is Håfveruds Rökeri & Brasseri, famed for its outstanding smoked fish – the perfect spot for lunch!
Dalsland is proud of its rich traditions in food, music, and art. Driving through the Dalsland forests, you’ll encounter unexpected attractions. Crossing Brudfjället, you’ll find NOT QUITE, an artist centre featuring workshops, galleries, a café, and creative activities. This vibrant, inspiring hub is well worth a longer visit!
Continue your journey to Baldersnäs Estate, where you’ll find handicrafts, market stalls, and a beautiful English park. You can even stay overnight in unique glass cabins that offer tranquillity and seclusion amidst nature.
From Baldersnäs, it’s a 90-minute drive to Halden. Crossing the border at Kornsjø, take a detour through Bakke to enjoy stunning views of the Iddefjord. Spend the rest of the day exploring Halden. After a restful night, wake up to views of historic Halden and the shimmering sea below. Enjoy a delicious breakfast at Fredriksten Hotell, then explore Fredriksten Fortress, one of Northern Europe’s most impressive fortifications.
