Fredriksten Fortress – A living history for over 350 years – from one of the country’s most important defense structures to one of its most spectacular cultural venues.


From being Norway’s most important fortification, Fredriksten is today a beloved hiking area and an international event venue. Visitors can stay overnight at the former barracks, now a hotel, and dine in the old commander’s residence. Events such as the Bilsport Classic Grensetreffet, the Grenserittet bike race, and Opera at Fredriksten take place in the same areas once used for drills, exercises, and punishment.

But be careful – history is never far away. Who really shot King Karl XII? What happened to the prisoners who tried to escape the fortress? And what is that floating around the Clock Tower at midnight…?
