Not far from the Swedish border and between Halden in the south and Marker in the north. Located Aremark with the two centers Fosby and Strømsfoss. Fosby with its town hall, petrol station, café and grocery store, and Strømsfoss with its locks, trade and history.

Lower your shoulders, sit back and enjoy the pleasant atmosphere in Aremark. Visit the lovely little town of Strømsfoss, idyllically located between Øymarksjøen and Aremarksjøen.

Strømsfoss is one of the most important hubs in the Halden Canal. Enjoy the cozy atmosphere and the beautiful nature in the old historic surroundings!

A center for trade and art - in the middle of the Halden Canal

In Strømsfoss you can stroll around and let time pass. Have an ice cream on the jetty, feel the grass between your toes, take a look at the boats and enjoy the day. The place is devoid of hustle and bustle. Mølleren's Hus in Strømsfoss is well worth a visit this summer! Here at Anne's there is a very special and pleasant atmosphere, and here you can buy clothes, jewelry, shoes, gifts, interiors, crafts, used antiques and much more.

Strømsfoss Mill is a typical village mill. The mill was in operation from 1897-1966 and has its own power station downstairs. In 1995, Strømsfoss Mill was established as a national museum for mills. From mid-July, the doors will open to the public in Galleri Strømsfoss. Elisabeth Due, originally from Aremark, rents the mill from the municipality and she will be organizing an art exhibition and running various courses this summer. In addition, a couple of concerts will be arranged outside the mill.

The veteran boat MS Thor is located on the pier north of Fossen. MS Thor was used as a tugboat for timber and barges on the Halden Canal until the 1920s. It was sold out of the waterway in 1941. MS Thor has been with many owners until it returned to the Halden watercourse in 1998. If you are a member of the boat, you can join trips out on the Halden Canal.

In Strømsfoss, you can experience a real old country store as it appeared in the old days (1896). Strømsfoss Handel sells kiosk goods, gifts, handicrafts, fresh eggs and other farm products, coffee and tea in bulk. You're also welcome to take a trip to the bookshop further into the building. The interior here is also of older days. A visit here offers a journey back in time.

Bruktbua in Fosby is also a pleasant stop. This is run by volunteers and here you can find lots of useful and useless things. A pleasant meeting place!

Historic Strømsfoss lock

Lock system in the Halden Canal between Øymarksjøen and Aremarkssjøen. Strømsfoss lock consists of two lock gates and one lock chamber, and has a lifting height of 2 m. It was built between 1857 and 1860, at the same time as Ørje locks.

Strømsfoss lock is operated by Anita. She is the fifth generation of lockmasters and lives in the lockmaster's house next door. The house has been refurbished, and the garden is in its full glory. An idyll both inside and out. Yes, the whole of Strømsfoss is a little idyll.

Join us on a sea voyage on the Halden Canal!

Café visits
Summer means café visits and low shoulders. Just enjoy the fact that others are cooking good food for you! At Furulund Cafe in Fossby, you'll find a cozy café that serves homemade home cooking, lunch and sandwiches. They also have take away and catering. In the café at Møllerens hus you can relax in cozy surroundings. There is food for both children and adults. In the summer you can buy swallows, house apple cake, coffee, rømmegrøt and more. Sit down outside on the beautiful terrace and enjoy the view of the Halden Canal!

Local food

Locally sourced food is becoming more and more popular. In Aremark you'll find a couple of places where you can pick up local produce. One of them is Mellom Fange Farm, which operates organically. The main production on the farm consists of grain, grass, sheep, suckler cows, chickens, pigs and chicken. At Berger Gård - here there is self-service.

Back to farm life

Maybe you caught the celebrity farm in 2022? It was filmed at Bøensætre Husmannsplass in Aremark. At Bøensætre you can take part in a similar farm program called “Kampen som husmann”.

Fishing
Some people prefer to dip their whole body in the water, while others love to stand and look out over the water to see if it wakes up. As mentioned, Vestfjella has many great fishing lakes with both perch and trout and more, or you can try your luck fishing for big pike in the Halden Canal.
