Høytorp Fort andTrøgstad Fort were established around 1915

These represented the most modern fortresses of the time. The construction of these forts was initiated after Ørje Fort, which was completed in 1903, had to be dismantled in connection with the dissolution of the Union in 1905.

Ørje Fort was too close to the Swedish border

and as a result, it was decided to build new forts further inland. Høytorp and Trøgstad became part of the strategic Glommalinjen, a measure to strengthen the defense line and reduce the threat from Sweden.

Refugee Routes

Along the border with Sweden, many were led through the forest in the twilight to hide from the enemy. Here, many risked their lives to save others, getting safely across the border to Sweden.

Today there are several routes

in our region that follow historical refugee routes. Both Marker, Aremark and other places along the border in Norway have routes that can be used to follow in the footsteps of the refugees.
