The fortress has been attacked six times, but never conquered. It was also here that the Swedish king Charles XII was killed in 1718. Today, Fredriksten Fortress is one of Norway’s most visited tourist attractions.

Halden Prison Museum

The museum offers a unique insight into Norwegian prison history through guided tours of the country’s only preserved district prison from 1863. Behind the old stone walls, visitors encounter powerful stories and an authentic glimpse into past conditions of incarceration.

Fayegården

Fayegården is part of the Østfold Museums network and is beautifully located by Busterud Park in the heart of Halden. Housed in a historic building from 1830, the museum brings the city’s history to life through exhibitions, events and family-friendly experiences.

The Monolith Museum

The granite from Iddefjorden has left its mark on cities around the world since the 1800s. The world-famous Monolith in Vigeland Park is carved from granite from Halden, and large parts of the park are built using stone from Iddefjorden.

Sightseeing on foot is a great way to get to know historic Halden. Start with a walk through the narrow alleys of picturesque Sørhalden, take in the elegant Empire architecture that still shapes the city, and follow the Tista River up to the old Red Manor; Rød Herregård.

Have you seen Moderne Markiser in the centre of Halden? Locals are quite proud of what is likely the city’s most photographed building – perhaps only rivalled by Rød Herregård and Fredriksten Fortress.

The building has now been purchased by the Norwegian Society for the Preservation of Ancient Monuments, ensuring that this distinctive landmark will remain part of Halden’s cityscape. And it really is quite something, isn’t it?
