The narrow-gauge railway “Tertitten” arrived in Skulerud in 1898, which was the terminus. Skulerud became an important hub between the railway, canal, and eventually buses. The railway's traffic base consisted mainly of forestry and agricultural products. Timber was transported to Skulerud and from there floated to Halden. Interconnection with DS Turisten also became a popular tourist attraction known as “The Great Round Trip.” The railway was closed in 1960.
Long before the railway came to Skulerud, the place was an important hub between road and waterway. Along with agriculture and forestry, Skulerud was an industrial center with log driving, steam sawmills, tanneries, and woodturning.
Work is now underway to reestablish the railway environment at Skulerud. This has been made possible through the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage's preservation program for technical and industrial cultural heritage sites. In 2016, part of the railway line at Skulerud was completely restored. The exterior of the smithy looks the same as before, but the interior has been converted into a coastal cabin. The site is home to the “Isbingen” museum, which has over 100 objects from the log driving era. The timber crane has been restored. There is also a service building on site.
At today's Skulerud, you can start your journey through the Halden Canal. There is a launch ramp, a guest pier, a service building, and you can even stay overnight at the coastal cabin, Smia. There is also plenty of parking space. Here you also have the opportunity to empty your boat's sanitary facilities. In the “station area” is Skulerud Grendehus, which can be rented for small and large events.
