Visit Halden with the kids this summer! The town offers plenty of family-friendly activities – whether you enjoy thrilling adventures, breathtaking experiences, nature, history, culture, or great food. We’ve got the best tips for your visit!​

 

Camping for the Whole Family
Halden is a family-friendly town offering plenty of options for accommodation, whether you stay in a cabin, bring your motorhome, or visit one of the municipality’s campgrounds, rental cabins, or forest cottages.

Langholmen Camping is set in historic surroundings along National Road 220, “The Blue-Green Road.” The site features a child-friendly beach and kiosk. From Langholmen, you can take a walk to Ystehede and continue to Skriverøya, with excellent swimming spots along the way. Halden is also known for its granite quarries, which are still active today.

Take a nature trip to Ertemarka and Ormtjernhytta with the kids, where you can explore the outdoors and discover fun trolls and fairy-tale figures along the Troll Trail. Fun for both young and old!

If the weather is warm, enjoy swimming at Krusetertjern, one of the town’s many family-friendly beaches. Kruseter features a sandy beach, a diving board from the rocks, a kiosk, and rental of water toys and equipment.

Climbing at Klatring på Grensen
While in Halden, don’t miss Klatring på Grensen, an award-winning climbing park focused on fun and skill-building. The park has 20 exciting climbing routes of varying difficulty, five Tarzan jumps, and many zip lines. You can also enjoy ground activities such as a bungee trampoline, 4-person bike, electric tricycles, frisbee golf, climbing walls, net walls, and net towers.

Exploring the Halden Canal
The Halden Canal is a unique cultural landmark, surrounded by a variety of family-friendly activities. Take a bike ride along the 80 km canal or rent a canoe for an adventurous exploration. There are also open shelters (gapahuks) that anyone can use.

Halden is home to Europe’s tallest locks, Brekke Locks, and you can grab ice cream and drinks at Brekkebua. Why not spend the night in a rented cabin? Via Ferrata Haldenkanalen is a must-see highlight, featuring a suspension bridge and zip line across the canal!

A Charming Town Center
Halden is a picturesque town by the Iddefjord, with the imposing Fredriksten Fortress overlooking the city. The municipality offers beautiful nature including forests, fjords, rivers, islands, and miles of hiking trails. In summer, enjoy the archipelago and family-friendly beaches.

The town center features cobblestone streets, shops, cozy restaurants and cafés, a riverside promenade with exercise equipment, and a lovely guest harbor. The center is compact and easy to explore on foot.

A walk or bike ride to Rød Herregård is perfect for the whole family. Start at Halden Guest Harbor, follow the main street across the footbridge, and through Os Allé. Stop by Erlandsens Conditori for a sweet treat, and let the kids play in Busterud Park. Continue to Rød Herregård to enjoy the gardens and take guided tours inside and outside the main house. The Herregård Café serves homemade food and drinks. Return via the new riverside promenade back to the town center and guest harbor.

A Day at Fredriksten Fortress
Learn how Fredriksten Fortress was built, who the “White Lady” is, and what really happened to King Karl XII. Family-friendly guided tours are available and can be combined with dining at the fortress restaurants.

The fortress offers numerous summer activities for the whole family, including Fredriksten Museum, playgrounds, and adventure trails.

Stay overnight in historic surroundings at Fredriksten Hotel or enjoy nature at Fredriksten Camping, with options for tents, cabins, or your own caravan. The mini-golf course is nearby, offering fun competitions for the entire family.
